Trekking bike, city bike or retro model – which bike should I get?
Choosing a new bike needs to be well considered. Ultimately the rider’s requirements should be reflected in the new bike. Do you simply want to ride short trips in the city occasionally or do you want to use the bike daily to get to work? Do you live on flat land or in a topographically more challenging region? Eight or 80 kilometres, how long are the rides that you plan to do?
Questions upon questions that we will discuss here and we want to provide you with initial purchasing advice at your fingertips that you can elaborate with your VICTORIA retail outlet.
Why we recommend that you select your bike from specialist retail will also be answered too.
VICTORIA bicycle model overview
Our trekking bikes offer riding fun for the most diverse of requirements
Trekking bikes are born generalists and offer a versatility that will satisfy almost every individual mobility need. VICTORIA distinguishes between two trekking bike directions that are currently on trend on the market. Either option will allow you to undertake Sunday outings and weekend trips with a clear conscience:
- Everyday riders, who simply want to ride and do not want to worry about good functional efficiency or technical intricacies, are best served by bikes with a rigid fork and a gear hub with belt or chain drive. The differentiation between these models and urban bikes is already minimal. Sprungmarke07
- In contrast, the VICTORIA trekking bicycles differ as they satisfy the original claim of being a trekking bike with suspension fork and derailleur. Riders of these models use their bike between town and countryside for a multitude of reasons and must adapt to different riding situations accordingly. Derailleurs with three chain rings on the bottom bracket provide the necessary versatility.
VICTORIA trekking models stand for the high level comfort requirements and are less about the haggling for the last gram of weight optimisation or an excessively sporty and agile frame geometry.
The top 3 arguments for 28-inch trekking bikes:
- Satisfy high comfort requirements
- Trend 1: Rigid fork and Shimano hub with belt or chain drive
- Trend 2: Suspension fork and Shimano triple chain ring derailleur
The urban bike
The urban bike is a relatively new category and has been derived from the classic city bike. And just like their precursors, urban bikes impress with their upright and comfortable seating position and the low step-through. Low-maintenance components are also used here as a matter of course. To this end, our urban series is only equipped with hub gears and we combine these with modern belt drives instead of chains to make these bikes as low maintenance as possible. In order to provide a clear differentiation to the classic city bikes, an urban bike should also offer more in terms of appearance. Modern hydroforming frame production methods enable a clearly flowing but organic style and thus provide the bikes with their very own character. Along with numerous premium components, there are also the extremely soft rolling and wide tyres that simply eliminate any need for a suspension fork.
- Urban carefree series thanks to state-of-the-art bicycle design
- permissible total weight 170 kg
- Low maintenance thanks to belt drive and hub drivetrains
- High level of comfort courtesy of extremely wide tyres
Wide tyres for smooth, silky comfort are a hallmark of VICTORIA city bicycles
VICTORIA has nailed the colours of comfort to the flag, as can be seen with its city bikes that use particularly low-maintenance Shimano gear hubs. Three, seven or eight gears ensure comfort. In order to be able to ensure a high level of safety, we have fitted not one but two (!) brake levers on the handlebar to back up the coaster brake.
The main characteristic of VICTORIA Classic city bikes is the low step-through. This classic frame design is therefore ideal, as you have to mount and dismount in the city much more often than when out on a cycling tour. Incidentally, men are increasingly being convinced about the benefits of a low step-through bike.
If you prefer a somewhat more dynamic look, and want to go along with the closed diamond frame, then we recommend the hub gear models in the VICTORIA trekking series, which are also available with the coveted Gates belt drive.
An additional comfort feature on the city bikes: the raised handlebar angled towards the rider for improving your overview of traffic.
The top 3 arguments for 26-inch/28-inch city bikes:
- Low step-through only
- Shimano hub gears on all models
- Safety first: always two brake levers on the handlebar alongside the coaster brake
Stylish and safe when cycling with VICTORIA retro bikes
The colourful retro bikes by VICTORIA embody a refreshing youthfulness, primarily aimed at a more female, younger or young-at-heart audience. The nostalgic look with floral elements on the deep drawn frame makes mounting and dismounting a pleasant experience thanks to the large inside width. The handlebar curved towards the rider along with the three and seven speed Shimano hubs with coaster brake makes for relaxing city excursions. The wide, silky soft rolling tyres provide the necessary comfort. Colour coordinated carriers and mudguards complete the rounded, stylish overall appearance along with the high degree of suitability for every-day use.
The top 3 arguments for 28-inch retro bikes:
- Nostalgia frame with low step-through, some with front carrier rack
- Shimano 3- and 7-speed hub gears with coaster brake
- Fresh colours
Safely on the way to school with VICTORIA youth bikes
Parents know at some point that a proper children’s bike is needed when their children outgrow the children’s trailer or the balance bike. This should be a carefully considered decision, as safety should always come first for a youth bike. Ultimately, children have a lot of fun using their bikes to roam the neighbourhood or make the daily trip to school.
VICTORIA youth bikes are available with 20-inch, 24-inch and 26-inch wheels. They are suitable from primary school age – depending on your child’s height. As a manufacturer, it is important to us that VICTORIA children’s and youth bikes are 100% roadworthy and comply with StVZO specifications (German road traffic licensing regulations).
Don’t buy just anywhere – the VICTORIA dealer network
VICTORIA offers numerous city bikes and eBikes exclusively via specialist retail. Unlike shippers, DIY stores or electrical wholesalers, you will receive specialist advice from an authorised VICTORIA bicycle dealer and can take a test ride, in order to determine the model best suited to you as well as the right frame size. And this is a crucial advantage not just with children’s bikes.

Which wheel size is the right one?
There are quite a few different wheel sizes. The most common for everyday cyclists are within the range of 20 to 28-inch. And you will find this choice at VICTORIA too.
20 and 24-inch bikes
20-inch wheels are not just frequently used on folding bikes or cargo bikes but on children’s bikes too. Thanks to the good rolling properties, children can easily keep up with grown-ups. Family cycle rides are now possible for the first time. 24-inch is the next larger, common wheel size and can also be found as the preferred choice for youth bikes.
26-inch wheels were used on mountain bikes until a few years ago; in the meantime, larger formats are preferred. 26-inch is still popular for city bikes and eBikes with low step-through, in conjunction with the smallest frame sizes. Specifically smaller riders with a body height of up to 1.60 m frequently find a bike that fits best here.
In the mountain bike segment in particular, the intermediate size 5-inch specifically draws on the advantages of the smaller 26-inch wheels and those of the larger 29-inch wheels. Popular urban bikes now use this size too, as the rims, which are usually wider, allow particularly thick and comfortable tyres to be fitted.
28-inch represents the standard size for bikes destined for everyday usage. These are used on the majority of VICTORIA models, as they provide the optimum balance between rolling characteristic and handling. This format is widespread and has established itself as the standard, when it comes down to high speeds and smoothness. As a result, this wheel size is also used on racing bikes, everyday trekking bikes and city bikes too.
